WLGA shares Welsh Government commitment to build more affordable houses

Wednesday, 10 July 2019

The WLGA has welcomed the Welsh Government’s response to the independent Review of Affordable Housing Supply which reported in May 2019.

Responding to the statement by Julie James AM, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Cllr Andrea Lewis (Swansea), WLGA Housing Spokesperson said:

“Councils share the Government’s ambition to substantially increase the supply of affordable housing across Wales; the ambitious plans and successful delivery of new council homes by many local authorities demonstrate that commitment.”

“Giving authorities access to Welsh Government grant funding for the first time to support the delivery of viable schemes will help to build more homes at pace and scale. We welcome that an announcement on rent policy will be made before the summer recess, and it is encouraging that the policy appears to offer certainty for the next five years.”

“Local authorities look forward to working with Welsh Government, RSLs and other stakeholders in the detailed design and implementation of changes to the existing grant arrangements and taking forward the other recommendations from the review.”

“Local Planning Authorities will ensure that these new initiatives are reflected in the next round of Local development plans that are currently being advanced.”
