Wales National Exercise Referral Scheme

Following a whole year of delivering virtual activities to our current referrals we are so pleased to inform you that the National Exercise Referral Scheme will be re-opening to new referrals.

More details will be provided to your locality health professionals by the local authority NERS coordinator. These details will give information regarding when their area will be ready to accept new referrals and what their offer would be as part of a blended delivery of virtual, indoor and outdoor activities.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this approach may cause, but we are resuming with these measured steps to ensure appropriate social distancing measures are in place. This is to protect the health and wellbeing of you, our NERS participants and also the staff who deliver the programme.

Overview

The National Exercise Referral Scheme is a Welsh Government funded scheme which has been centrally managed by Welsh Local Government Association working in partnership with Public Health Wales (PHW) since July 2007.

Due to the retirement of the NERS Manager Public Health Wales have taken this opportunity to take the management of NERS inhouse from April 1st, 2022. PHW have confirmed this will not affect the delivery of the Scheme, that operates across all 22 Local Authority areas of Wales.

The Scheme aims to standardise exercise referral opportunities across all Local Authorities and Local Health Boards. The Scheme is an evidenced based health intervention that incorporates physical activity and behavioural change, it supports clients to make and maintain healthier lifestyle choices which will improve their health and wellbeing.

The aim of the Scheme is to reduce the inequalities in ill health by providing access to tailored and supervised physical activity. The target population is aged 16+ who are not used to being regularly physically active and are at risk of or currently experiencing a long term or chronic health condition. The Scheme is designed to provide opportunities to exercise that are fun, rewarding and that can be incorporated into everyday life.
