The WLGA is unique among the UK’s local government associations in holding both its improvement support activities and its policy activities within the same organisation. This has the following advantages:
- It ensures that there is a strong political commitment to the improvement support activities
- It allows policy work to be informed by information and direct experience of practice and performance
- It allows improvement support activity to be informed by policy priorities
The WLGA established an ‘Improvement Board’ in 2009. The Improvement Board consists of the key local politicians with leadership roles in the delivery of local services and is advised by senior professionals from within local government and elsewhere. The Board promotes improvement from within the family of local government, encouraging the sharing of best practice, peer support and mutual-aid between authorities.
The Board seeks:
- To support improvement and challenge poor performance within local government
- To provide a strong and visible commitment to the shared learning between public service organisations as a means of transferring success and avoiding failure
- To improve early warnings of any service deterioration and facilitate early support.
The Board meets up to 3 times a year and feeds into the Efficiency and Innovation Partnership through its chair, WLGA Improvement Spokesperson Cllr Russell Roberts.
Membership:
- Chair: Cllr Russell Roberts - WLGA Improvement and Public Services Spokesperson
