Wales Strategic Migration Partnership

Established in 2001 the Wales Strategic Migration Partnership for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants (WSMP), previously known as the Welsh Local Authorities Consortium for Asylum Seekers and Refugees, works with stakeholders in the statutory, voluntary, private and community sectors to provide a strategic leadership, advisory and coordination function on migration in Wales. There are Strategic Migration Partnerships in Scotland and in each of the English Regions, and a Northern Ireland Partnership is currently being established.

In 2009, the WSMP were seconded to the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) from Newport City Council and are now hosted by the WLGA. This move was designed to better reflect the Partnerships’ enlarged All Wales role around migration, and to help foster closer working with the 22 local authorities in Wales, improving links with local government’s political structures and local priorities.

The Partnership’s aims are to:

  • Facilitate collaboration and debate among the UK Border Agency, national, regional and local government and non-governmental organisations and, regional and local stakeholders to develop a strategic approach to promoting the benefits of migration and minimising any adverse impacts.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of local and national migration policy.
  • Work with local delivery partners to design and oversee delivery of services that meet migrants needs in that region/national area.
  • Act as a conduit for two-way information between UK Border Agency, other government departments and regional/national partners and facilitate multi agency meetings on migration

Meetings of the Partnership are held quarterly, for further information contact info@wsmp.org.uk
