The Third Sector is vitally important to Welsh local government and the people of Wales. It acts as a voice for new and unrecognised needs; it provides a way for people to take part in the public life of the community and nurtures community leadership and local democracy; it offers people a stake in society; it is a respected source of independent information, advice and advocacy on a wide range of subjects; and, it provides an enormous range of practical services to people.
The WLGA and Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) have worked together during recent years to encourage engagement and partnership between local government and the third sector.
In the context of the current economic climate, local authorities and the third sector will need to co-operate to make the best use of resources and provide the best services locally. This could mean encouraging an increase in co-delivery of public services in Wales, where activities and services are designed by a wide range of partners, bringing together the third sector and the public sector, with the citizen and the community at the centre.
