Training, awareness and lifelong learning is a fundamental component of promoting Equality and Social Justice and represents the opportunity for local government to inform and educate elected members, senior management and staff. Training must reflect the importance of equality in relation to all the authority’s functions, especially community leadership, performance management activity and fundamentally service delivery.
Equalities has formed part of the curriculum for local government training for the past 20 years. In the current climate of public service scrutiny and accountability, local government must deliver training in an effective and efficient fashion and must be able to demonstrate the organisational benefit of providing it.
The WLGA Equalities and Social Justice Team is committed to increasing awareness and understanding of equalities and social justice in Welsh Local Government, but also to developing skills and improving the delivery of services to the whole community. Achieving Equality and Social Justice externally and internally is crucial to local government performance. A variety of training courses that have been successfully delivered in Welsh Local Government are currently being offered by the team – details of these courses can be obtained by following the links on the right.
The Team also aims to support Welsh Local Government in the development of and/or delivery of training. The WLGA recognises the value of having a stimulating training programme that reflects the culture of the organisation and recognises individuals’ roles and responsibilities – and always considers individual authorities needs when developing specific training programmes as required by authorities – for an example of such work click on the link below for Equalities Awareness Training for Elected Members. The team is also currently working to support authorities in the development and delivery of training strategies.
