The Youth Service in Wales

Youth Work is a distinct profession with local authority provision dating from the 1930’s and has a statutory basis under the Learning and Skills Act 2000. The Youth Service Strategy (2007) presents a further opportunity to build on this and other recent important developments.

Details of the above can be found on the Welsh Assembly Government website. www.wales.gov.uk

Some of the key principles of the Youth Service are that:

  •     it is based on a voluntary relationship, entered into by young people because they want to.
  •     the work has an educational purpose;
  •     the focus of the work is directed towards young people and young people are valued for who they are rather than what they    can achieve.

The Principal Youth Officers Group (PYOG), which is made up of local authority officers, has an established role in advising on the strategic development and delivery of youth services and other associated initiatives on behalf of local authorities in Wales, as a sub-group of The Association of Directors of Education in Wales (ADEW).
