The foundation phase consists of curriculum and assessment arrangements for 3 – 7 year olds, and is directly related to the activities of schools in the lower age range. The aim of the foundation phase is to provide a rounded approach to the education of young children with a combination of child initiated and adult directed learning. One of the key aims of the Foundation Phase is an increased child to staff ratio of 1 adult to 8 children which is aimed at improving increased input by qualified staff.
