We at Tesco are proud to be associated with the Excellence Wales Awards. We work with local authorities and communities across Wales to achieve local excellence.

THE ENVIRONMENT

We have committed to halving our carbon footprint per square foot by 2020 from our 2006 level, for example at our environmental Swansea Llansamlet store we have already reduced energy consumption by 36%. Our carrier bags are now degradable and our ‘Green Clubcard Point’ scheme helped our customers save over 1,000,000,000 bags in the UK last year, a reduction of 25%.

PROMOTING WALES

We sell more than 400 Welsh products – for example, all milk sold in Welsh stores is Welsh, as are our Tesco free range eggs. Over 2,500 Welsh
farmers supply us with meat and produce. All Tesco superstores and Extras have bilingual signage and we are working to offer the same in Express
stores. We are also looking forward to celebrating St. David’s Day with local promotions and products.

EMPLOYMENT

Tesco is the largest private sector employer in Wales, employing around 17,000 people, providing some of the best pay and benefits in the industry
with great career opportunities.

WE WISH EVERYONE LUCK AT THE AWARDS
Felix Gummer
Wales Corporate Affairs Manager

We are proud to be sponsoring the Excellence Wales Award ‘Our Economy’ this year and the public sector’s spirit of supporting local businesses and celebrating entrepreneurship within Wales. The FSB is the largest campaigning pressure group promoting and protecting the interests of the self-employed and owners of small firms across the UK. Formed in 1974, it now has over 210,000 members across the UK. Small businesses are important to the future of Wales and we need to develop our own firms today to become the multinationals of tomorrow. For many small villages in Wales, local amenities are at the heart of the community around which village life evolves. We look forward to working with local authorities to make sure these enterprises survive and thrive in years to come.

Janet Jones, Chair, FSB Wales

“The annual Excellence Wales initiative is an opportunity for local authorities to demonstrate innovation and best practice across a wide range of policy areas. Recognising new and successful approaches pushes forward the whole process of policy development and implementation throughout Welsh local government to the overall benefit of everybody in Wales.”

Dr Denis Balsom, Editor, The Wales Yearbook

BT is delighted to once again be supporting Excellence Wales. These awards provide a unique opportunity to highlight those local authorities who
stand out for their achievements. BT, as a major provider of services to the local authority sector throughout Wales, would like to congratulate all of the winners and applicants listed tonight. The benefits of partnership working between public and private sectors are clear and we look forward to continuing working with Welsh local government in delivering excellent services to the people of Wales.
