The following guidance has been designed to help local authorities engage with self-assessment and the Equality Improvement Framework to effectively mainstream equalities.
The guidance can also be used to:
- link equalities to associated policy agendas such as community cohesion
- help local authority officers responsible for co-ordinating the equality and improvement agendas and to encourage joint working in authorities where these roles are not combined
- help elected members and service managers interested in embedding equality into the design and delivery of citizen-focused community planning and service improvement activities.
To accompany the guidance and to assist local authorities is a preliminary assessment tool which can act as a guide in starting the self-assessment process. This should not be intended as a standard or a checklist though but rather as a guide to development, providing examples of the way in which the authority may move forward in the implementation of the EIF and the identification and subsequent achievement of equality outcomes.
