Figures released in June 2010 show that there were 1,753 schools in Wales, attended by 467,141 pupils with 25,287 full-time equivalent teachers.
There were:
- 25 nursery schools
- 1,462 primary schools
- 223 secondary schools
- 43 special schools
Compared with 2009 figures there were:
- 20 less schools
- 2,500 less pupils
- 275 less teachers
The total local authority net revenue expenditure for education services in Wales in 2010-11 is budgeted at £2,182 million.
The majority of schools in Wales are maintained by their local authority and have a direct relationship with their Council.
