Rural parts of Wales face a unique combination of housing pressures which affect not only deep rural areas but also the high proportion of Welsh Authorities that have rural areas within their boundaries.
Pressures include an increase in housing demand due to high levels of in-migration, a shrinking stock of social housing, high housing development costs which limit new housing supply and a low wage economy. These factors combine to place affordable housing beyond the reach of an increasing proportion of families.
These growing problems of housing supply and affordability have serious implications for the sustainability communities, language and culture and the health of the wider economy of rural Wales.
