WLGA to celebrate Diwali festival with Hindu community
29 October 2008
Cllr Lindsay Whittle (Caerphilly), WLGA Spokesperson for Equality, Social Justice and Community Safety will be celebrating Diwali with the people of Wales on 1st November at the National Museum for Wales in Cardiff. He will be attending the Diwali Mela event which has been arranged with the Hindu Association Wales and India Centre, Cardiff.
Speaking about why the event is important he said:
“Increasing understanding and respect between different communities is important in building cohesive communities and I am delighted to have been invited again this year to celebrate Diwali with the people of Wales. Diwali is an important festival for Hindu people and it is a time for people to come together to celebrate and demonstrate the huge contribution they have made to Welsh society.
Celebrations like this help us learn about each other’s cultural and religious beliefs and customs and in this case to increase understanding of the Hindu religion and their religious celebrations. I urge other people to also attend this event which is planned as a ‘family fun day’ with music and dance, arts and crafts and much more. To live in harmony together we need to understand each other much better and this will be an opportunity to celebrate with the Hindu community across Wales and learn more about the multi-cultural society in which we all live.”
