WLGA Responds to WAG "zero waste" Strategy
29 April 2009
Cllr Aled Roberts, WLGA Environment Spokesperson said:
Local Government has worked very closely with the Welsh Assembly Government over the development of the Strategy. The 70% waste target by 2025 is challenging yet very aspirational and boldly places Wales at the forefront of environmental protection and sustainability. Local authorities take their environmental responsibilities very seriously. Indeed councils are already more than exceeding their waste targets set by the Welsh Assembly Government and will continue to deliver provided they are adequately supported both in terms of adequate funding and producer responsibility. On that basis, we particularly welcome the 70% target set today for the other sectors. For a long time local government has argued that there needs to be a level playing field when it comes to waste management. Whilst local authorities have had to comply with statute, retailers on the other hand have had voluntary agreements. Today, the Welsh Assembly Government has taken the bold steps needed to resolve this.
