WLGA congratulates Councillor of the Year 2009

09 December 2009

Cllr Dyfed Edwards, WLGA Deputy Presiding Officer and Plaid Cymru Group Leader was named ‘Councillor of the Year’ at the Politician of the Year Awards held in Cardiff last night.

Congratulating him on his award, Steve Thomas, WLGA Chief Executive said:

“The Association warmly congratulates Dyfed on this excellent achievement. He is an excellent ambassador for local government in Wales and hugely respected, both in terms of the work he carries out within his own local authority and for his contribution within the WLGA as Deputy Presiding Officer and Plaid Cymru Group Leader. He also plays a key role in advising the Association on issues relating to leisure, the Welsh language and tourism.

These are exceptionally difficult times for Welsh local authorities with much worse to come over the next few years. Councils are facing huge pressures within social care, education, housing, transport and waste which require difficult resource prioritisation. Awards like these are more vital than ever in recognising the significant role that councillors play in leading and providing for their communities during these difficult times including making very difficult decisions around service cuts, as well as exhausting every option for increasing efficiency, collaboration and improving local service delivery.”
