Diary marker- WLGA Annual Conference 2011

Next week the stage will be set for political leaders and key opinion formers across national and local government as well as private and voluntary sector experts to present their visions for local government and Wales’ Communities post election.

During the first major conference to be held since the Referendum and May elections, over 200 delegates will assemble in the Liberty Stadium to debate the challenges facing Government in Wales, both national and local and how both administrations can work together to deliver a better Wales.

First Minister, Rt. Hon Carwyn Jones will open the conference and will set out the Assembly’s priorities for local government over the next term and how it plans to use its new law-making powers.

During a full day of conference debate and workshops the WLGA leadership, Ministers and Senior AMs will give their views for addressing these priorities, as well as explore in detail a range of key challenges across local government’s range of services and responsibilities, including:

• Meeting the financial challenge
• Delivering better Welsh communities through partnership
• The role of local government in education

Keynote speakers include:

• Ieuan Wyn Jones, AM, Plaid Cymru Leader
• Kirsty Williams, AM, Liberal Democrat Leader
• Consverative Party Leader- tbc
• Cllr John Davies, WLGA leader
• Cllr Meryl Gravell, WLGA Presiding Officer
• Gerry Holtham, Visiting Professor at Cardiff Business School
• Dr Eurfyl ap Gwilym, Institute of Welsh Affairs
• Professor George Boyne, Cardiff Business School
• Victoria Winkler, Director, The Bevan Foundation
• Paul Lewis, Freelance Financial Journalist (presenter of Money Box on Radio 4)

Freelance journalist and broadcaster Rhun Ap Iorwerth will be chairing the event.
