WLGA welcomes 6th forms funding boost
16 April 2009
The WLGA has welcomed the Welsh Assembly Government’s announcement to provide an additional £8.9 million to fund post-16 education in Wales. This funding announcement follows pressure from the WLGA, local authorities and teaching unions to increase the funding for 6th form education after the Assembly Government announced earlier this year to cut its funding for next year by 7.5%.
Cllr Peter Fox (Monmouthshire), WLGA Life-long Learning spokesperson said:
“Local authorities welcome this additional funding for school 6th forms and we are pleased to see the Welsh Assembly Government listening and responding to the real concerns of the education sector in Wales. The problem remains, however, that some local authorities will see a reduction in the amount of money that they have next year to fund 6th form education. This additional funding will not be enough to fill the funding gap in school 6th forms. The 7.5% funding cut amounts to a £9 million shortfall in funding for 6th forms across Wales. The additional funding announced this week is for post-16 education and training more broadly, meaning schools and further education institutions.”
