Welsh pupils maintain high A Level Standards

The Welsh Local Government Association congratulates Wales’ pupils today on another excellent year for A-level and Welsh Baccalaureate results, this year has seen the highest success rate to date for the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification.

“Today’s results reinforce the dedication and excellent abilities of Welsh pupils, and also reflect the hard work of our education professionals, both within schools, local authorities and further education institutions across Wales.”

“Welsh local authorities are committed to providing an excellent education system for Wales and will continue to invest in this crucial area. Today’s results provide a sound basis for future improvement in Welsh schools.”
Notes for editors:
• Overall, there was a marginal increase in the percentage of students in Wales who gained A*- E grades, from 97.1% in 2010 to 97.2% this year
• The percentage of candidates in Wales gaining grade A* has decreased slightly from 6.5% to 6.3% whilst the proportion of students gaining A grades has decreased from 24.4% last year to 23.9% this year.
• A total of 6,948 candidates were awarded the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma, compared with 4,360 in 2010, the highest success rate to date for this qualification.
• The overall pass rate for the UK rose slightly from 97.6% to 97.8%
