Welsh local authorities disappointed by cuts to transport grants

18 January 2012

A WLGA Spokesperson said:

“Welsh local authorities are disappointed by yesterday’s announcement by the Welsh Government (WG) of cuts to the Bus Service Operators Grant and the Local Transport Services Grant. Whilst cuts were expected, the severity of the cuts was unforeseen and local authorities are now warning that the affect on services is likely to be severe.”

“Local authorities are particularly disappointed by the late notice given for these cuts which has meant councils have been unable to budget for them when drawing up their 2012-13 spending plans. Bus companies and councils in England have been given 18 months to prepare for a 20% reduction starting in April, in contrast, Welsh councils will suffer a 25% cut with just 3 months warning.”

“WLGA have had productive discussions with the WG regarding borrowing initiatives to improve the condition of the road network but it is important that cuts in other areas don’t undermine this progress.”
