Lifelong Learning, Culture & Information

Lifelong learningThe WLGA supports local authorities as the central planning and delivering mechanism for education in their local communities. Local authorities in Wales provide a high standard of learning that meets the needs of all age groups. Wales has a fine tradition of educational achievement and pupils in Wales consistently attain high standards, which continue to improve year on year. Initial figures for examination results in 2006 show that there was an overall increased pass rate in A level, up 0.1% with 96.9% achieving A to E grades and overall GCSE results were up 0.4% to 98.1% with A* to C grades up 1% to 62.3%. In addition to these results the new Welsh Baccalaureate has proved to be very successful in 2006 with 76% of pupils that completed the Diploma being awarded the full Advanced Diploma, which is the equivalent to an A grade at A Level.

The National Assembly for Wales has responsibility for all education functions in Wales, excluding teachers pay and conditions. The WLGA works closely with the Welsh Assembly Government Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS), to develop policies and strategies that support local authorities in continuing improvement in education.

The WLGA works closely with local authorities and professional networks, such as the Association of the Directors of Education in Wales (ADEW) and the Principle Youth Officers Group (PYOG). ADEW also has a number of other sub-groups dealing with a range of education and children’s services issues, a full list of these groups can be found at the ADEW website.
