Local Government has a key role to improve health and promote opportunities for everyone to play full and active roles within communities. They also have a major role in protecting the environment and vulnerable people. The WLGA provides support for these interconnected themes, focusing on:
- strengthening local authorities’ capacity to plan and deliver services that prevent ill health and reduce inequalities in health
- acting as a specialist resource to integrate health and well being into national and local government policy, partnerships and service delivery
- supporting authority representatives on Local Health Boards and local partnerships
disseminating good practice
There is also a growing resource within the WLGA for developing policy and increasing the overall performance of social services. There is a Children Commissioning Support Resource which supports councils develop commissioning strategies for looked after children and to manage individual care effectively. Pending funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, the WLGA is establishing an improvement agency to support local improvement plans for social services across Wales.
