Excellence Wales was the good practice award scheme for the Welsh local authorities and the wider local government family from 2005 to 2010. The scheme was developed during 2005 following extensive consultation with local authorities, regulatory bodies and the Welsh Assembly Government.
To support its objectives Excellence Wales involved commending good and innovative practice through award recognition; disseminating good practice through national learning events, peer to peer contact and exchange visits and web-based and other forms of practice exchange; positive and sustained national and local public relations work to promote good practice and build public confidence and interest in local services.
The themes were informed through consultation with a range of stakeholders and were topical issues. Applicants provided examples of good practice which represent new or ‘ground breaking’ ways of designing and delivering public services and/or proven ways of delivering service improvements and efficiencies. Applicants were required to demonstrate outcomes arising from change and improvement.
All applications were subject to a rigorous assessment process which included a site visit by members of an Independent Assessment Panel, who had a wide range of public and private sector knowledge and were able to explore the applications from different perspectives.
Over the 5 years, the scheme received and assessed over 250 applications, covering a range of themes such as street services, housing, health and social care, older people, children & young people, climate change, collaboration etc.
In addition to showcasing good practice at national learning exchanges across Wales and other partner events, over 200 case studies of good practice have been developed and hosted on this website.
Details of successfully awarded authorities are detailed in the Celebration of Success brochures.
