Working Better Together

06 September 2005

Working Better Together (England) was jointly produced by the Environment Agency (the Agency) and the Local Government Association (LGA) in December 1999. In Wales, Working Better Together in Wales was agreed and signed between the Environment Agency Wales (EAW) and the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) in September 20011.

The organisations agreed to a number of ‘commitments’ to improve working relationships between local authorities and the Agency. These commitments were short term, with the intention that both plans should be reviewed to focus on achieving environmental outcomes.

This new 2003 version, which replaces the previous Memorandum of Understanding, aims to deliver that intention by setting out the range of environmental outcomes that will be delivered efficiently by local authorities and the Agency working better together nationally, regionally, and locally. How these can be achieved by local action is set out in a
series of ‘protocols’ that support this plan for England and Wales by establishing a framework for technical co-operation on the ground.
