In 2008 the Welsh Local Government Association initiated a 3 year Climate Adaptation project called Changing Climate Changing Places, in partnership with UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP), Environment Agency Wales and Countryside Council for Wales and four pilot unitary authorities in Wales: Cardiff, Flintshire, Gwynedd and Rhondda Cynon Taff.
The aim of the project was to explore the following questions:
- What does climate change mean for our community?
- What risks and opportunities does climate change represent to services and particular communities and localities?
- How can we adapt now and in the future?
From 2008-11, the four authorities undertook Local Climate Impact Profiles, with the support of Science Shops Wales at the University of Glamorgan, initiated the use of BACLIAT tool across their organisations, and to a greater and lesser extent engaged with local partnerships and key professionals in their organisations to identify key risks, opportunities, knowledge gaps and climate adaptation challenges.This report is an evaluation of this activity, and as such, focuses on the learning from the pilot rather than the detail of methodology.
