Education finance

Local authorities receive approximately 80% of their funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and the remaining 20% from local council tax. Local government in Wales spends approximately £1.9 billion on education. A large proportion of this money is delegated directly to schools who manage their own budgets.

School Buildings Improvement Grant

The Welsh Assembly Government has made a commitment to provide funding to local authorities for the improvement of school buildings. The School Buildings Improvement Grant (SBIG) is currently set at £81.685 million per year and this level of investment is set to continue until 2010. The grant allows each local authority to access a one off lump sum of £9 million, in addition to receiving a formula allocated amount of funding.

Local authorities across Wales are making use of this funding to ensure that existing schools are suitable for educating children and young people and also to build new schools where they are needed.
