Delivering the right information, for the right people, at the right time is a vital role of the European Office, due to the fact that there are a wide range of information and intelligence services available covering sectoral or policy interests. The WLGA’s European Office is a “one-stop-shop” for Welsh local authorities on European issues and developments.
The office’s key delivery messages are:
Putting customers first
The three members of staff will meet with local authorities as required, and have a dedicated knowledge and up to date understanding of the priorities and projects that are of interest to local government. In this way the European Office will provide a clear added value to the WLGA and local authorities – providing a service tailored to the specific needs of local government.
Understanding customer’s requirements
The needs of local government in relation to European issues are paramount, as Welsh local authorities will need a solution that is more responsive to their agendas. To ensure this, the WLGA European Office participates at European Officers meetings throughout Wales and at other local government events and networks. The European Office works closely with the WLGA Policy Officers and advisors to assist the European Office in having a better understanding of local government needs.
Proactive and reactive
There are a number of European issues where the WLGA office takes a proactive approach – as outlined in our policy priorities. The European Office will need to continually review these priorities as Europe develops. Additionally, there will be occasions where local authorities would like information concerning areas outside of our policy priorities. In this case the WLGA will be reactive to local authorities’ needs.
Working as a functional office
The European Office ensures a seamless approach to providing functional information for WLGA member authorities. At a functional level the European Office:
- Lobbies and promotes the interests of the WLGA to European Institutions and key decision-makers;
- Provides support in policy development and influence;
- Facilitates communication on local government’s needs, proposals and responses to key EU decision makers;
- Provides information on funding schemes;
- Gathers intelligence on legislation and the policy making process to the WLGA and Welsh local authorities;
- Develops and maintains close relations with the European Union Institutions, regional and local representations and other European associations.
Being flexible
The Office works in a flexible manner, therefore providing the coverage needed for Welsh local government in relation to European issues.
