These workbooks provide a series of distance learning materials aimed at helping all councillors to develop their skills at the local level. They cover a broad range of generic skills as well as specific issues and service and or policy areas and their impact at ward level. The workbooks will be particularly useful to new councillors. Each workbook has been designed to take two to three hours to complete and can be used by individual councillors as part of their own personal development, or with groups of councillors as part of a wider development programme.
The workbooks have been developed specifically for Councillors in Wales by the WLGA from those provided for members in England by Local Government Improvement and Development (formally the IDeA) and reflect the political structures, policy and guidance relating to Wales.
New titles will be added throughout the year
In some cases the English workbooks from Local Government Improvement and Development will also be useful and are linked here. However please note that there will often be different policy structures and guidance from the position in Wales.
