The WLGA works closely with others bodies such as the Wales Strategic Migration Partnership, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Local Government Association to influence how policy relating to public service delivery in Wales for asylum seekers, refugees and economic migrants is developed. The WLGA is a member of the UK Government’s Migration Impacts Forum (MIF) which is a group of individuals from local government, health, education, the police and criminal justice system, the voluntary sector, the CBI and TUC who meet quarterly to discuss with Ministers the wider social impacts of migration and how migration affects public services and local communities. The MIF is co chaired by Hazel Blear, secretary of State Communities and Local Government, Liam Byrne Minister for Borders and Immigration and Pamjit Dhanda Minister for Cohesion – Communities and Local Government. Further information and papers and agendas from the meetings are posted on the website.
Below are some of the WLGA policy responses to key consultations from the UK and Welsh Assembly Government on issues affecting asylum seekers, refugees and economic migrants.
