Biodiversity and Ecological Foot-Printing

Biodiversity

The Sustainable Development Framework has not published a specific module on Biodiversity due to the wide range of resources already available to authorities via the Wales Biodiversity Partnership. For specific information on legislation and guidance for authorities on biodiversity please visit the Wales Biodiversity Partnership website here.

Ecological Foot-Printing

An ecological footprint is a broad measure of resource use which highlights where consumption is exceeding environmental limits. It is the measure that allows us to calculate human pressure on the planet and come up with facts, such as: If everyone lived the lifestyle of the average Welsh person we would need 2.4 planets to accommodate their consumption. There are various ecological foot-print tools that help nations, regions, local authorities, organisations and individuals to measure their foot-print and suggest changes to policy and behaviour that will make a difference.

In February 2010 the WLGA organised an event to inform local government about ecological foot-printing tools and to share current best practice. A video of the event can be viewed here. (available shortly)

There were also two presentations from local authority representatives sharing good practice. These can be viewed below.
