Strategy for Older People

The Welsh Assembly Government’s Strategy for Older People sets a challenging and comprehensive framework for addressing issues that will arise as part of an ‘ageing society’. Local authorities are key partners in the delivery of this Strategy and ‘joining-up’ services is at its core of implementation as well as improving key services, such as housing, social services, benefit advice and access and transport. With funding from the Assembly, authorities have appointed Older People Strategy Co-ordinators who work at the local level in implementing the Strategy.

Opportunity Age – Meeting the Challenges of Ageing in the 21st Century

The UK Government’s strategy on the ‘ageing society’ was launched in April 2005 and demonstrates their commitment to set the direction for how all agencies can adjust their thinking about ageing. The strategy sets out their approach in three key areas:

  • Age and the workforce;
  • Promoting active ageing;
  • Developing services which promote independence and well-being.

The strategy also highlights the role local authorities play in creating inclusive communities which is needed in order to counter the isolation which otherwise older age can bring.
